LAHORE: Lahore Capital City Police Office (CCPO) Umer Sheikh on Monday apologised for his statement on the Lahore motorway gang rape incident.
The police met with Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and tendered an uan unconditional apology towards the victim, her family, and others affected by the incident. He said he apologises if his remarks have unintentionally hurt anyone’s feelings.
“My statement was not meant to hurt anyone’s sentiments. Therefore, I deeply apologise for my remarks,” he told the court. “I did not intend to hurt anyone,” he added. Sheikh said that he apologises his “brothers, sisters and the society who have been hurt by his remarks.”
The governor said the CCPO’s statement has caused anger among the family members of the victim as well as society. He said police chief gave an explanation on his statement during the meeting. Umar Sheikh said the suspect will soon be brought to justice.
The Lahore High Court has taken strong exception to Lahore CCPO’s remarks on the motorway gang rape and summoned him to appear in his personal capacity and explain his position.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan was hearing a writ petition seeking the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the incident.
Earlier during the hearing, the chief justice remarked that the entire provincial cabinet should have apologised over the CCOP’s statement.
The chief justice asked a state prosecutor present in the courtroom if any action was taken against the Lahore police chief over the statement. The counsel replied that an inquiry has been launched into the matter.
The judge remarked that the government can form a judicial commission as per the law. The counsel informed the court that the FIR of the incident has been registered and an investigation launched to arrest the culprits.
