RAWALPINDI: Outgoing United States (US) Ambassador to Pakistan Paul W. Jones called on Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, on his farewell visit on Wednesday.
A statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said COAS Bajwa thanked the US Charge d’Affairs for his services and contributions in Pakistan.
Ambassador Paul W. Jones also lauded Pakistan’s positive role for the Afghan peace and reconciliation process and ensuring peace and stability in the region.
Pakistan played an important role in facilitating the peace process between the Taliban and the US, he said.
Earlier, both the US and the Afghan governments had demanded Pakistan to influence and bring the Taliban to the table talks. As a result of Pakistan’s efforts the Afghan government agreed to release 4,000 Taliban inmates from jails.
An agreement has been reached between the Taliban and Afghan administration to maintain a ceasefire and call off attacks to bring stability and peace in the region.
On August 12, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had said Pakistan will continue playing a facilitating role for regional peace and stability including the Afghan peace process.
He was talking to Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Atif Mishal, who paid a farewell call. The foreign minister said durable peace and stability in the region is linked to peace in Afghanistan.
He said the intra-Afghan dialogue will pave the way for sustainable peace in Afghanistan. The Afghan ambassador thanked the foreign minister for his good wishes.
