WASHINGTON: Scientists have forecast that the last full supermoon of this year will be sighted on 7th May.
According to scientists, this week will be the last time for people to see the supermoon in full glory. The morning of Thursday would mark the peak of the ‘super flower moon.’ The full moon in May was called the flower moon by some Native American tribes for the large number of flowers that bloom this month.
The term ‘supermoon’ can refer to either a new or a full moon that happens at or near perigee-syzygy, a mouthful that means the moon is at the closest point to Earth along its orbit around our planet.
A supermoon appears larger than a regular full moon. Earlier, the ‘pink moon’ of April was the biggest of the year, but May’s moon should be just as gorgeous. The moon will appear full for about three days around this time, from Tuesday evening through Friday morning,” said NASA in a statement.
The “Flower Moon” is the last in a series of four supermoons in quick succession this year. The others occurred in February, March, and April.
According to NASA, a supermoon happens when a moon is both full and closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit at the same time. This phenomenon makes the full moon appear slightly brighter and larger than normal, the agency added.
