ISLAMABAD: The Lahore High Court will hear the case of plastic bags being used across Punjab today.
LHC Judge Justice Shahid Karim will conduct the hearing. A petition was filed in this regard that people staged a sit-in protest against the decision of the government to ban plastic shopping bags.
On 29th February, the judge directed the Punjab government to seal shops and bakeries who were still using the plastic bags despite the government’s strict order.
The judge in his remarks directed the shops and companies that produce plastic to switch from it to alternative bags within two weeks. A seven-day notice was also given to the owners to implement the orders.
The judge further said that in the next phase the court would ban the use of plastic material in the restaurants and bakeries.
Plastic bags are used for containing goods such as foods, produce, powders, ice, magazines, chemicals, and waste. Every year, about 1 to 5 trillion plastic bags are used and discarded around the world.
