ISLAMABAD: The initial investigation report into the PIMS fire tragedy has been submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to media reports.
The inquiry committee, headed by former Interior Secretary Shahid Khan, finalized its findings and sent the document to the Prime Minister’s Office late last night.
Sources said the report was first delivered to the office of Prime Minister’s Advisor Tauqir Shah, who then forwarded it to the premier along with a briefing on its contents and recommendations.
Officials confirmed that the report carries the signatures of all committee members, giving it formal validity.
Causes, Responsibilities and Rescue Challenges
According to reports, the committee has determined the causes of the nursery fire and identified those responsible.
The report also highlights the difficulties faced by rescue teams during relief operations, noting delays and inadequate facilities at PIMS Hospital. Interviews with doctors, administrators, fire brigade officials and rescue staff have been included to provide a comprehensive account.
Recommendations for Accountability
The report recommends strict action against PIMS staff who were absent at the time of the incident. It also outlines measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future, including improvements in fire safety infrastructure and emergency response readiness.
Most importantly, media reports say, the committee has urged the Prime Minister to take immediate action against those found negligent.
PIMS Fire Tragedy Background
It may be recalled here that the August 26 blaze at PIMS’ Mother and Child Health nursery ward claimed 14 newborn lives, later followed by the death of another abandoned infant, Ali.
Earlier, Parliament was assured by Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and Health Minister Mustafa Kamal that the preliminary report would be released promptly. The submission of the initial findings now places responsibility on the Prime Minister to decide whether to make the report public.
