ISLAMABAD: Even after three days, the preliminary report of the investigation committee into the PIMS fire tragedy has not been released, despite repeated assurances from government officials.
The committee, headed by former Interior Secretary Shahid Khan, was formed on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and has already recorded statements from staff and senior officers.
Assurances in Parliament Not Fulfilled
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar had assured Parliament that the preliminary findings would be presented by last night. Health Minister Mustafa Kamal also indicated that the report would be released soon, promising strict action against those found responsible.
However, the report has yet to be made public, fueling frustration among lawmakers and families of victims.
Minister Takes Responsibility
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Health Minister Mustafa Kamal declared: “I take responsibility for the PIMS tragedy. Whoever is responsible, including me, will not be spared.”
He assured that the report would be submitted to the Prime Minister and emphasized that no one, regardless of position, would be shielded.
Kamal criticized Pakistan’s “rotten system,” noting that calls for his resignation had already been pre‑empted by his own decision to step down, though he was asked to continue.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution moved by Barrister Daniyal Chaudhry, expressing deep regret over the tragedy and demanding strict punishment for those responsible.
PIM Fire Tragedy Background
The August 26 fire at PIMS’ Mother and Child Health nursery ward claimed 14 newborn lives. Earlier, a CDA audit report had flagged outdated firefighting equipment and faulty alarm systems at PIMS, warning of a possible tragedy.
The delay in releasing the inquiry’s preliminary findings has intensified public mistrust, with families and opposition leaders demanding transparency and accountability.
