KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has reported the country’s first successful discovery of high‑quality offshore gas, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s energy exploration efforts.
According to a PPL spokesperson, hydrocarbons were discovered in Sujawal district both onshore and offshore, with the breakthrough achieved at the Dolphin X‑1 well in the Sarani block.
This marks the first discovery from the Chiltan Formation of the Lower Indus Basin.
The well is currently producing 950,000 standard cubic feet of gas per day.
Drilling commenced on April 17 and reached a depth of 3,850 metres. PPL holds a 75 per cent working interest in the Sarani block, while operator GHP owns the remaining 25 per cent.
In a letter to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, PPL described the development as “unique and important,” expressing gratitude to the Pakistan Navy for its cooperation in the Dolphin X‑1 project.
Experts say the discovery in marshy land and shallow offshore areas highlights promising prospects for expanding Pakistan’s exploration potential.
The find is expected to boost confidence in tapping shallow offshore zones, which remain largely underexplored.
