KARACHI: An underground oil pipeline leaked in the Khayaban-e-Sahar Street 13 area of Defence Phase 6 on Saturday, leaving the road flooded with crude oil and bringing traffic to a standstill.
According to police, the spill originated from an ageing oil line located in the middle of the road. The leakage forced authorities to completely seal the stretch for traffic movement.
Road Closed to Prevent Untoward Incident
Police said the DHA vigilance team promptly reached the spot and alerted the relevant agencies.
Personnel from the administration and law enforcement agencies have been deployed in the area to cordon off the site and divert traffic to alternative routes as a safety precaution.
Officials confirmed that the National Refinery Limited (NRL) has shut down supply through the affected pipeline and repair work has been started.
Recurring Leaks Raise Safety Concerns
It is pertinent to recall here that this is not the first incident of its kind in District South.
Earlier, serious furnace oil leakages were reported on the same road in October 2024 and on Sea View Road in December 2024.
The repeated incidents have sparked concern among residents of the posh locality, who have urged the administration and the refinery authorities to ensure a permanent repair and replacement of the old pipelines to avert environmental and safety hazards in the future.
