TEHRAN: Thousands of mourners attended funeral prayers for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Sunday at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla, with senior cleric Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani presiding over the ceremony.
The funeral service was conducted in three separate segments. The first prayer was offered for the Supreme Leader, followed by prayers for three other deceased individuals: Seyyedeh Boshra Hosseini Khamenei, Mesbah al-Hoda Baqeri, and Zahra Haddad Adel. A third prayer was held for Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani, the Supreme Leader’s granddaughter.
The multi-day farewell ceremony commenced Saturday morning at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla, drawing massive crowds of mourners paying final respects. The main funeral procession in Tehran is scheduled for Monday, with additional ceremonies planned across key religious centers.
Funeral processions will be held in the holy city of Qom on Tuesday and in Mashhad on Thursday, where Ayatollah Khamenei will be interred at the Imam Reza Shrine. Special ceremonies are also planned for Wednesday in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.
It may be recalled that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei embraced martyrdom following military escalation between the United States, Israel, and Iran on February 28. International tributes were paid by world leaders and dignitaries on Friday.
