KARACHI: Three separate investigation committees are reported to have been formed to probe the case of suspected cocaine dealer Anmol alias Pinki, even as the joint investigation team (JIT) announced earlier by Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar remains unnotified.
The minister had called the matter a “test case” and said the JIT would comprise the Additional IG, an intelligence representative and a bureaucrat, but police sources said no names had been notified and no progress made on that front.
According to media reports, Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho has constituted two separate committees and issued a notification to that effect.
The first is a six-member team tasked with investigating the accused in drug, arms and murder cases registered at Garden and Baghdadi police stations. The committee, led by SP Investigation South II, includes officers from SIU, CIA and district police. It has been directed to conduct the probe “by fulfilling all legal requirements” and submit a report within 15 days.
The second is a four-member oversight team led by DIG South Zone. It will monitor serious cases registered at Garden and Baghdadi police stations. The team comprises DIG South Syed Asad Raza, SSP SIU Samiullah Soomro, SSP South Mahzoor Ali and SSP City Syed Ali Hassan. The committee is bound to monitor the cases on a daily basis and ensure that “all evidence is presented in court after completing its investigation,” officials said.
Meanwhile, MM News has learnt that a third investigation team formed under SSP South on the orders of the Karachi police chief has begun work. The team has recorded statements from three suspended police officers and two lady constables.
The inquiry will also examine why the accused was not produced in court handcuffed and with her face covered. Officials said they had decided to review CCTV recordings from Garden Police Station to determine how and where the accused was kept.
“The accused’s behaviour towards the officers and personnel inside the police station will also be made part of the report,” an official said. The team will investigate why Garden police officers “violated the rules and regulations.”
Murder case surfaces
It should be noted that a murder case has also come to light against Anmol alias Pinki. According to an FIR registered at Baghdadi Police Station, she is named in a “cocaine murder case,” officials confirmed.
Interestingly, Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar had earlier announced a JIT comprising the Additional IG, an intelligence representative and a bureaucrat, calling the matter a “test case.” However, police sources said the names of that JIT had not yet been notified and no progress had been made.
The three committees are now running parallel inquiries into the criminal cases, the investigation process, and departmental lapses linked to the high-profile arrest.
