SBP’s foreign exchange reserves rise by $56 million to $16.16 billion

The central bank’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $56 million during the week ending January 30, 2026, reaching $16.16 billion, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan on Friday.

As of January 30, the country’s total liquid foreign reserves stood at $21.34 billion.

A breakdown of the reserves shows that the State Bank of Pakistan held $16.16 billion in foreign reserves, while commercial banks’ net foreign reserves were recorded at $5.18 billion.

In its statement, the central bank noted that during the week ending January 30, 2026, the State Bank’s foreign exchange reserves rose by $56 million, reaching $16,157.2 million (approximately $16.16 billion).

It is worth mentioning that recent inflows under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) significantly strengthened the reserves. The State Bank of Pakistan continues to manage repayments, with the current level reflecting a sustained effort to build foreign exchange buffers.

New currency notes approved, Rs5,000 note here to stay

The State Bank of Pakistan has finalized the design of new currency notes, with the State Bank Board approving the plans and sending them to the Ministry of Finance for government clearance. Governor Jameel Ahmed confirmed that the new notes will be issued once official approval is granted, while dismissing any proposals to discontinue the Rs5,000 note, ensuring the high-denomination note will remain in circulation.
