World Statistics Day is being observed today across Pakistan and around the world. The purpose of celebrating World Statistics Day is not only to highlight the achievements of the field of statistics but also to ensure that data is used for sustainable development, poverty eradication, and socio-economic progress. Better data not only improves government policies but also enhances citizens’ quality of life.

According to details, workshops, seminars, and other activities are being organized across Pakistan and worldwide on this occasion to raise awareness among people about the importance of data. Through World Statistics Day, statisticians, policymakers, and ordinary citizens are brought together on one platform to benefit from data-driven decision-making.

The United Nations has stated that this day is celebrated every five years on October 20 to highlight the importance of statistics and to help achieve sustainable development goals through it. This year’s central theme is “Better Data, Better Lives,” which emphasizes the significance of data and its role in effective policymaking.

At its 41st session in February 2010, the United Nations Statistical Commission proposed that October 20, 2010, be celebrated as the first World Statistics Day (decision 41/109). The aim of this proposal was to promote the production of reliable and timely statistics, which are essential for informed policy decisions and monitoring the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

In his message, the UN Secretary-General said that under the United Nations’ structural reforms, efforts are being made to strengthen capacities in data, digital, technology, and innovation sectors to achieve success in the 21st century. He stated that the Secretary-General’s “Data Strategy for Action for Everyone, Everywhere” is an agenda for data-driven transformation. Data is embedded in all aspects of our work, and its power—if used responsibly—is of key importance for global agendas.

Why a five-year gap?

Statistical systems evolve more slowly than social or humanitarian issues that annual days often highlight. Major improvements — such as new census data, global data standards, or advances in statistical technology — typically occur over longer cycles. That’s why the five-year gap also aligns with the periodic nature of many national statistical activities, making each observance a moment to reflect on progress and set new goals.
