Renowned playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy has revealed that her playback journey began in 1971 with a Bengali duet, marking the start of a remarkable path in the Indian music industry.
“I first sang in a Bengali film, Shriman Prithviraj (1971), in a duet with Lataji. While Bollywood brought me recognition, it was the Bengali music industry that laid the foundation of my musical journey and gave me my identity,” Krishnamurthy shared during a video conversation with Indian media.
Krishnamurthy began her playback career at the age of 16, and over the decades, music has continued to provide her with deep purpose and fulfillment.

Her versatile repertoire includes iconic songs like Hawa Hawai (Mr. India, 1987), Pyar Hua Chupke Se (1942: A Love Story, 1994), Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999), and Dola Re Dola (Devdas, 2002), along with acclaimed renditions of Rabindra Sangeet and devotional bhajans. Her journey through India’s musical landscape remains widely celebrated and deeply respected.
Born Sharada Krishnamurthy into a Tamil family residing in government quarters near Kali Bari on Mandir Marg in Delhi, Kavita’s early life was steeped in culture — from Rabindra Sangeet and Durga Puja to a home filled with the aroma of traditional cooking and the melodies of Lata Mangeshkar, her mother’s favorite artist. So passionate was her mother’s love for music that she would often become absorbed in songs on the radio — sometimes even forgetting dishes on the stove.
Her formal training in music began under the guidance of her maternal aunt, Protima Bhattacharya, who recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue Rabindra Sangeet seriously. At the age of 14, she moved to Mumbai, enrolled at St. Xavier’s College, and came under the mentorship of Ranu Mukherjee, daughter of legendary composer Hemant Kumar — a pivotal influence in her early career.
Kavita Krishnamurthy’s enduring legacy is not only defined by her vocal brilliance but also by her deep-rooted dedication to her craft — a journey that continues to inspire generations of music lovers and aspiring artists alike.
