Aga Khan V: Championing Health as a Vital Component of Life

Ambassador Dr. Jamil by Ambassador Dr. Jamil
March 29, 2025

Health is a fundamental aspect of our life, and it plays a crucial role in enhancing our overall well-being and quality of life, the importance of which no sensible person can deny.

As human beings, we have made remarkable progress in the field of medical science in the past and present centuries, which has allowed us to significantly improve our health and extend our lifespan to some extent. From its inception, medical science has gone through a long and exhausting journey, filled with major discoveries and successes, which have illuminated the entire world with its bright rays.

As a result, historic success has been achieved in improving and prolonging human life. One of the most significant milestones in medicine has been the discovery of antibiotics, which revolutionized the treatment of infectious diseases and saved countless lives. Another milestone has been the invention, promotion, and development of vaccines, which helped control and prevent the spread of deadly diseases like polio and smallpox.

When the coronavirus began to spread havoc worldwide, the whole world trembled, fearing that humanity’s end was near. However, it was the vaccine that saved human lives even from such a deadly disease, and even today, new vaccines are being developed in response to emerging strains of pandemics, which will benefit the public in the future.

Advancements in medical technology have brought about more effective diagnoses and treatments for various diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. Furthermore, modern treatments like gene therapy and immunotherapy are offering new hope for patients who previously had limited treatment options and little hope of recovery. However, despite these advancements, there is still much work to be done in the field of medical science.

Diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and HIV/AIDS remain major challenges for today’s medical scientists, and cancer remains an unsolved puzzle for humankind. An essential factor in advancing medical science is education. Teaching future generations of doctors, researchers, and scientists is crucial for the continued development of the field of medicine. By investing in education, we can ensure that the foundations of our knowledge and skills remain strong and stable, equipping us with the necessary tools to tackle the complex medical challenges of the future.

Education is not only important for those associated with the medical profession but also crucial for the general public so they can take care of their own health and improve their standard of living. By acquiring knowledge about healthy habits and making informed, long-term decisions about our health, we can stay healthy and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Services of Aga Khan in the Health Sector

In Pakistan, as well as in various developing and underdeveloped countries in Asia and Africa, the health sector lacks adequate attention. For a long time, seeing loved ones in remote areas suffer from various diseases and losing their lives due to lack of medical facilities was almost like the witnesses embracing death themselves. However, in numerous backward areas, individuals and organizations driven by the spirit of serving humanity are providing medical services to the public. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), as a global organization, is striving to improve the quality of life for people in developing countries.

When people in a remote, developing, or underdeveloped region receive modern health services, their happiness knows no bounds. Thanks to the prayers of these deprived people, institutions under the leadership of Prince Rahim Aga Khan are continuously progressing by leaps and bounds. In this regard, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) states that they are working in more than 30 countries around the world. Currently, they are involved in over 1000 programs and institutions, some of which are more than 60 years old, and some over 100 years old.

According to AKDN, the total number of their employees is approximately 96,000, most of whom come from developing countries. The annual expenditure for all non-profit development activities is estimated at 1 billion dollars. Their economic development arm, the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, generates 4 billion dollars annually; however, all profits from project companies are spent on development activities, especially for the welfare of underdeveloped and remote areas, or regions affected by natural disasters or civil war.

Aga Khan Health Services is a network of hundreds of institutions in various countries that provide health services to the needy, middle, and low-income individuals, setting an example of humanitarian service. These institutions include hospitals and health centers offering basic health services, maternal and child care, as well as specialized services like cardiology, oncology, neurology, and other medical facilities.

In this way, Prince Rahim Aga Khan, beyond just his followers and community, has become a savior for the public, tirelessly working day and night to alleviate their pains, sufferings, and concerns. Aga Khan Health Services provides health services focusing on various social strata to cater to the real needs of the deprived population. This ensures that health services are accessible to all individuals, and the financial burden of medical treatment does not fall entirely on anyone.

Not only that, but Aga Khan Health Services has also placed special emphasis on the education and training of doctors, nurses, and medical staff to ensure that the entire network is used to provide the best medical services to the public. In this regard, cooperation is also extended to local governments and other organizations.

Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS), Aga Khan Foundation, and Aga Khan University are key institutions that provide standard health services to 8 million people annually. AKDN states that they also work in the areas of planning, training, and resource development. The Aga Khan Health Network, established in the 1920s, has developed hundreds of health centers and hospitals, playing a vital role in enhancing healthcare services and promoting the well-being of communities worldwide.
