Marvel boss Kevin Feige has confirmed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will get its first transgender character in the forthcoming The Eternals.
Fans have repeatedly urged Marvel to include more trans representation in the franchise, which has been criticised in the past for its handling of gender and sexuality.
Asked at the New York Film Academy whether Marvel has any plans to introduce more trans characters. Feige said: “Yes, absolutely yes.”
He added: “Very soon, in a movie we’re shooting right now, yes.”
While Feige did not elaborate on his answer, the only Marvel movie currently in the middle of filming is The Eternals starring Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden and Kumail Nanjiani.
Feige previously confirmed that one of the film’s characters is trans man saying that the mystery character is “married, he’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is”.
Feige said that both Black Panther and Captain Marvel were deliberate attempts to “showcase heroes from the comics that represent the world that goes to see our movies”. The Eternals will be released on 6 November, 2020.
