The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) is holding a nationwide protest against the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act Amendment Bill. Protests and rallies are underway, advocating for the reestablishment of media rights.
The Joint Action Committee of journalists’ organizations is supporting the nationwide demonstrations, aimed at opposing what they are labeling as a “draconian law,” suppressing free speech and press freedom. The JAC has pledged a strong public and legal fight against the so-called controversial bill.
Talking to journalists, the President of PFUJ, Afzal Butt, stated that the PECA Amendment Bill is a “black law,” and journalists will launch an impressive nationwide movement against it. “We categorically reject this law. Media workers and journalists must unite and stand against this unlawfulness with protests and processions,” he stated.
On the other hand, the Joint Action Committee also condemned the step taken by the government to hurry the approval of the bill, declaring it proof of bad intentions. According to the committee, they have begun consultations with human rights groups, bar councils, and other stakeholders to build a broader alliance against the bill.
