YouTube has announced plans to address “egregious clickbait” in India by targeting videos with titles and thumbnails that misrepresent their content. However, the platform has not clarified how it will classify news or current events, nor has it provided specifics on the methods it will use to detect discrepancies between a video’s thumbnails, titles, and actual content.
On Wednesday, Google said that stricter measures against such videos would begin in India, particularly for those covering breaking news or current events. The company also confirmed that enforcement of these updated policies will expand in the coming months.
YouTube highlighted the frustration and deception viewers feel when misled by clickbait, especially when seeking critical information.
“We are intensifying our efforts to combat blatant clickbait on YouTube,” the platform wrote in a blog post. “This involves increased enforcement against videos where the title or thumbnail promises something the video does not deliver. This is especially important for content related to breaking news or current events, ensuring viewers are not misled. We will gradually roll out these changes in India over the next few months.”
