The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, calling on Israel to withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories and advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The resolution was adopted with an overwhelming majority of 157 votes in favor, while eight countries, including the United States and Israel, opposed it. Seven nations abstained from the vote.
In its resolution, the General Assembly reaffirmed the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state, declaring Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip as illegitimate.
The Assembly also reiterated its steadfast support for a two-state solution to the Israeli occupation of Palestine, emphasizing that this solution envisions two states coexisting peacefully and securely within the borders established in 1967.
During the session, it was announced that a high-level international conference would be convened in New York in June 2025. The conference will be co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia and it aims to advance diplomatic efforts to achieve a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue.
The overall Palestinian death toll since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza has reached at least 44,502 with more than 105,454 wounded. Thousands more remain trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings.
