Three men lost their lives after their car, misled by Google Maps, drove onto an under-construction bridge and plunged into the Ramganga River in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, police reported.
The incident occurred on Saturday as the victims, identified as Vivek, Amit, and an unidentified third man, were traveling from Gurugram to Bareilly to attend a wedding. They relied on GPS navigation, which directed them onto the unfinished flyover. The vehicle drove onto the incomplete bridge and fell approximately 50 feet into the shallow river below.
Local residents discovered the wrecked car the following morning and alerted the authorities. Police arrived at the scene, confirmed the fatalities, and transported the bodies for post-mortem examinations.
“At around 9:30 AM, we were informed about a damaged Wagon R car, possibly hired as a taxi, found in the Ramganga River. It had fallen from an incomplete bridge,” police stated. “The identities of two victims, Amit and Vivek, have been confirmed, and efforts are underway to identify the third.”
The victims’ families criticized officials for their negligence, questioning why the bridge remained unfinished without proper barricades to prevent accidents. They demanded that an FIR be filed against the construction department for alleged oversight.
