The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) that it has revoked the notice responsible for suspending access to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
During a recent SHC hearing on petitions challenging the ban of X across Pakistan, PTA’s legal representative, Saad Siddiqui, said that the earlier directive to block the platform had been rescinded. In response, the court asked if this meant the platform was now accessible again.
However, Moeez Jafri, the petitioners’ lawyer, noted that despite the withdrawal of the notification, users still could not access X. The court emphasized that since there was no current order enforcing the shutdown, access should be restored. Yet, another PTA lawyer said he had no knowledge of the notice’s withdrawal.
In July, the Pakistani government had informed the SHC that X posed a “national security threat” and could not be reinstated. The Interior Ministry, in a written response to the court, defended the ban imposed in late May and stated there were no plans to lift it.
