Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy Stree 2 has set a new benchmark at the Indian box office, surpassing the Hindi version of Pathaan to become the second highest-grossing Hindi film in India.
This achievement follows the film’s recent milestone of surpassing the Hindi version of SS Rajamouli’s 2017 blockbuster Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.
Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, accumulated a total domestic box office collection of Rs.516.25 crore net by Saturday. This figure was enough to edge out Baahubali 2 and position Stree 2 as the third highest-grossing Hindi film.
On Sunday, Stree 2 added approximately Rs.10 crore to its total, bringing its earnings to around Rs.527 crore net. This new total surpasses the Hindi version of Pathaan, which had collected Rs.524.53 crore. Consequently, Stree 2 now holds the second position, just behind Jawan, which remains the highest-grossing Hindi film with Rs.582.31 crore net.
The film has enjoyed a relatively competition-free run at the box office for the past few weeks. The release of Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut, Emergency, was delayed due to certification issues by the Central Board of Film Certification. However, starting September 13, Stree 2 will face new competition from Hansal Mehta’s investigative thriller The Buckingham Murders, featuring Kareena Kapoor.
Stree 2 is a sequel to Amar Kaushik’s 2018 hit Stree, which launched Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy cinematic universe. The film also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee, Aparshakti Khurana, and Tamannaah Bhatia. It has been well received and continues to draw audiences since its release on August 14.
