The Punjab government has partnered with a Chinese solar company to establish a solar panel assembly and manufacturing facility in the province. This collaboration is a result of the efforts and support from the Special Investment Facilitation Council.
The agreement was signed by Alex Heng, President of AIKO’s South Pacific Region, and Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, Punjab’s Minister of Industries and Commerce. During the signing ceremony, the minister emphasized that AIKO’s solar panel factory will serve the local market and contribute to exports.
According to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), only 5.4 percent of Pakistan’s power generation comes from wind, solar, and biomass, while fossil fuels still dominate the energy mix at 63 percent, followed by hydropower at 25 percent.
It is worth mentioning that the majority of solar panels used in Pakistan are imported from China. Demand for solar energy has risen in recent years as more homes and businesses recognize it as a reliable and cost-effective source of electricity.
