In a move that will affect households and businesses nationwide, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a significant increase in the basic power tariff.
The price hike of Rs7.12 per unit will be applicable to all electricity consumers, including K-Electric customers. However, consumers using up to 200 units will receive a temporary exemption from this increase for three months.
This latest hike comes on the heels of a recent tariff increase of Rs3.32 per unit, announced just days ago. The cumulative effect will result in a substantial increase in electricity costs for consumers, likely to impact household budgets and business expenses.
The government’s decision to implement a uniform national tariff aims to secure funding for electricity distribution companies (Discos) and meet the requirements for an IMF bailout. While the government can adjust rates for different consumer categories, the overall revenue requirements remain unchanged.
Consumers are advised to prepare for higher electricity bills in the coming months, with the exemption for low-usage consumers providing some temporary relief.
