Everything to know about Pakistan’s first-ever Shark Tank Show

Pakistan is set to launch its own version of “Shark Tank” after Grenlit Studios secured the franchise, bringing the country’s entrepreneurial talent to the global stage. This isn’t the first time an international show has made its way to Pakistan; previous attempts include “MasterChef Pakistan” and “Pakistan Idol,” both of which generated significant buzz but were discontinued after just one season.

Usman Malik, CEO of Grenlit Studios, said that the decision to acquire the rights to “Shark Tank” was inspired by the show’s success in India.

His company has partnered with Sony Pictures Television to bring the franchise to Pakistan. “We are thrilled to bring the monumental success and global appeal of Shark Tank to Pakistan,” Malik said in a statement to a local publication.

“This collaboration with Sony Pictures Television not only marks a significant milestone for Grenlit Studios but also underscores our commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within Pakistan.”

The show, which originated in Japan in 2001 as “Tigers of Money,” has seen various adaptations around the world. The UK’s “Dragon’s Den” aired in 2005, while the US version, “Shark Tank,” premiered in 2009. The format has been adapted in numerous countries, including Afghanistan, Israel, and Bangladesh, with the latter’s 2022 launch marking the 50th remake of the show.

One of the initial challenges was selecting the “Sharks,” or investors, for the show. However, seven individuals have now been finalized for these roles. They include Rabeel Warraich of venture capital firm Sarmayacar; Junaid Iqbal, who played a key role in Careem’s expansion in Pakistan; Aleena Nadim, who was featured in Forbes 30 under 30 Asia; and Romana Dada, head of the Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund in Pakistan, among others.
