The surging summer demand has led to a staggering surge in lemon prices, soaring by nearly 150 percent in the past month to Rs 1000-1100 per kilogram.
Consumers who rely on this citrus fruit for homemade remedies and culinary enhancement are reeling from the abrupt spike.
Just a month ago, lemons were fetching between Rs 200 and Rs 300 per kilogram at retail outlets. The sharp cost escalation is attributed to the intense heat, prompting increased lemon usage for refreshing beverages.
However, this economical and healthful summer staple has become inaccessible to citizens due to the current exorbitant prices.
Key lemon-growing regions in Punjab, including Sargodha, Sahiwal, Sialkot, and Multan, as well as areas in Sindh such as Sukkur, Khairpur, and Nawabshah, have suffered from scanty rainfall during the fruit-bearing season. This adverse weather has led to a forecast of diminished production, with the dry spell delaying and reducing the harvest.
Typically, producers sell their produce to intermediaries or contractors who distribute the fruit to major cities. Presently, these contractors wield market control to their advantage. The diminished supply from crucial production areas this year is chiefly responsible for the price hike. Although lemon quality remains high, traders note insufficient supply to meet demand.
