KARACHI: In an effort to address the severe water shortage in Karachi, City Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has unveiled a new water project for the metropolis.
In a statement released locally, Mayor Karachi announced the approval of a proposal aimed at augmenting Karachi’s water supply from the Hub Canal to mitigate the city’s water scarcity.
He further stated that the project, valued at Rs 12 billion, aims to deliver 200 million gallons of water to the city and is projected to be completed within a year.
Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab also revealed another proposal forwarded to the Sindh government, aiming to bring water from Keenjhar Lake to Karachi, with an estimated cost of Rs 77 billion.
Highlighting the aging water infrastructure in Karachi as a contributing factor to the shortage, he noted, “The water supply system in Karachi from the Hub Dam, now 45 years old, currently yields only 55 million gallons of water instead of the intended 100 million gallons. Consequently, a new canal will be constructed to ensure the provision of the full 100 million gallons to Karachi.”
He emphasized that the construction of the canal from the Hub Dam, alongside other water supply projects such as K-IV, will significantly alleviate the water scarcity issue in Karachi.
