15,000 teachers in Punjab to get e-bikes under government scheme

MM News Staff by MM News Staff
April 24, 2024

The Punjab government has announced an e-bikes scheme for teachers, following the launch of a similar program for students.

Spearheaded by Provincial Education Minister Sikandar Hayat, this initiative aims to provide 15,000 teachers across the province with electric two-wheelers.

The scheme will unfold in three phases, with an initial distribution of 5,000 electric bikes to teachers, followed by an additional 10,000 in subsequent stages. This move comes as a response to the financial strain caused by soaring petrol prices, offering educators a more economical and environmentally friendly mode of transportation to their schools.

Minister Hayat anticipates that the transition to electric bikes will result in substantial savings for teachers in terms of commuting expenses. He remains optimistic about the initiative’s potential to deliver tangible benefits, both in terms of cost-effectiveness and environmental preservation.

This announcement comes on the heels of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s launch of a registration campaign aimed at providing 20,000 bikes to university students across the province, including a mix of electric and petrol models. In the initial phase, the initiative will offer 19,000 petrol bikes and 1,000 e-bikes to university students, with the Punjab government stepping in to subsidize the markup by Rs1 billion and cover the initial Rs20,000 down payment for each bike on behalf of the students.
