The Pakistan Army has committed to conducting transparent investigations into a recent confrontation between police and army personnel, sparked by the arrest of a serving officer.
The incident, which gained significant traction on social media during the Eid holidays, involved Pakistan Army soldiers assaulting police officials in Bhawalnagar, Punjab province.
Footage circulating on social media depicted the soldiers assaulting the police at the Madrisa Police Station. The altercation ensued after the police seized illegal weapons belonging to the brother of one of the soldiers. A group of soldiers arrived at the station in several vehicles, forcibly seized keys from a police officer, and entered the premises, leading to chaos. They proceeded to attack the officials using rifle butts and sticks, inflicting injuries on several individuals, including the station SHO, whose injuries were evident.
In response, four personnel from the Madressah police, including the station house officer, were arrested on charges of unlawful detention, dereliction of duty, and misuse of authority. Additionally, the Maroot police SHO was suspended pending a departmental inquiry for disseminating “misinformation” about the incident on social media.
The military’s media wing issued a statement acknowledging the unfortunate incident in Bahawalnagar and emphasized that it was swiftly addressed through collaborative efforts between military and police authorities.
The statement condemned the spread of divisive propaganda on social media aimed at sowing discord between state institutions and government departments.
