The federal government has increased electricity rates by Rs5 per unit for the duration of one month. This decision was endorsed by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) following a request from the Central Power Purchasing Authority.
The adjustment in prices is attributed to fuel adjustment charges and will be effective for the month of February.
In a similar move earlier in February, NEPRA announced an immediate hike of Rs4.56 per unit in electricity costs. This adjustment, part of the December fuel adjustment, will be reflected in consumers’ bills in the upcoming month.
Consequently, consumers are expected to bear an additional burden of Rs40 billion due to these tariff adjustments. Notably, within a span of two months, electricity prices have surged by Rs13.69, with November alone witnessing an increase of Rs4.13 in tariff.
February saw the sale of over 6.8 billion units of electricity. Among the sources of electricity generation, hydel energy contributed 24.77%, followed closely by nuclear energy at 23.29%. Imported LNG accounted for 20.23% of the power generation, while 11.04% was generated from local gas sources.
