KARACHI: The government has started preparations to impose an additional burden of Rs 967 billion on electricity consumers in the country, after negotiations with the IMF.

According to the report of Dunya News, Nepra sources said that for the next fiscal year, 6 government electricity distribution companies have submitted applications to Nepra for the increase in electricity prices, which will be heard on April 2 next month.

The petitions have been filed for the revenue requirements of the financial year 2024-25. Earlier on March 19, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had increased the price of electricity to Nepra by Rs 4.99 paise per unit. The application was submitted.

It should be noted that electricity prices have been increased several times during the caretaker government, while a further increase in electricity prices was expected after ongoing negotiations with the IMF.

Sources said that before the budget of the next financial year, the electricity prices in the country may increase further, which will further increase the burden on the people who are suffering from poverty and inflation.
