The Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) in Karachi holds a significant place in the industrial history of Pakistan. Established in the 1970s with the assistance of the Soviet Union, PSM was envisioned as a cornerstone of the country’s economic development, aimed at reducing dependence on imported steel. Over the years, it played a crucial role in supporting various industries and contributing to the nation’s infrastructure.
The mill’s current situation is one of uncertainty and challenges. Persistent financial difficulties have resulted in operational setbacks, affecting the production capacity and overall performance. Privatization efforts have been considered, but progress has been slow due to various factors, including political considerations and the complexity of the restructuring process.
