Pakistan jacks up electricity prices on account of fuel charges adjustment

MM News Staff by MM News Staff
February 15, 2024

ISLAMABAD:  In another blow for inflation-weary Pakistan, the power regulator increased electricity tariff by Rs1.15 per unit on Wednesday.

Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) announced the decision after hearing a plea seeking an increase in electricity price. The power distribution companies will recover billions from consumers in bills for Nov 2023.

The decision is expected to put the burden on Pakistanis who remained in dire straits as economic challenges mount. The new prices will be effective from January 1, 2024.

Govt ends free electricity units for specific employees

NEPRA announced the hike after Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) filed a plea seeking an increase of Rs4.66 per unit on behalf of power distribution companies (DISCOs) under Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA).

CPPA maintained that total electricity generated with various fuels in February 2023 was recorded at 7.22 billion at a basket price of Rs9.44 per unit.
