The first glimpse of Ripley, Netflix’s latest series featuring Andrew Scott, has been unveiled through three captivating photos.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, this eight-part adaptation chronicles the journey of the eponymous character (played by Scott) as he succumbs to the allure of opulence in 1960s Italy.
The initial images showcase Scott’s Ripley in stunning black-and-white photography, a notable departure from the 1999 film adaptation that highlighted the sun-drenched beauty of the natural landscape.
Scheduled to premiere next year, the series follows Tom Ripley, a hustler navigating early-’60s New York. His life takes a drastic turn when he encounters a wealthy man who recruits him to travel to Italy and persuade his son to return home. However, immersing himself in their world of opulence triggers a transformative journey for Tom, marked by deceit, fraud, darkness, and, inevitably, murder.
The cast includes Johnny Flynn, Dakota Fanning, and Eliot Sumner, with Steven Zaillian, the creator of The Night Of, handling both scriptwriting and directing duties.
Scott, known for his roles in Sherlock and Fleabag, recently shared that he was once advised to keep his sexuality private in the early stages of his career. Reflecting on that advice, he expressed gratitude for ultimately ignoring it. Despite acknowledging the reasons behind the guidance, Scott finds discussions about sexuality sometimes exhausting, recognizing the importance of the topic while expressing a desire for a less sensationalized discourse.
