LAHORE: The engineers and workers of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) have demanded the caretaker government provide security to the staff doing fieldwork.

The demand was put forward to the government in a rally taken out from the Lesco Headquarters to the Civil Line Police Station.

Addressing the rally, the union leaders said some 50,000 cases had been lodged against the electricity thieves but not a single person had been punished so far.

They urged the caretaker prime minister to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for the field staff during the performance of duty and bring the suspects to the book.

The caretaker government on Wednesday announced launching a data-based countrywide crackdown on electricity theft and low recoveries, together causing an estimated annual loss of Rs589 billion.

The action, coming on the heels of nationwide protests against bloated bills, will include removal of corrupt officers across the distribution formations and depoliticisation of the management and boards of distribution companies (Discos).
