KARACHI: Despite being sentenced to life imprisonment, a 54-year-old inmate Muhammad Yusuf, jailed in Landhi prison, did not give up and set an example for other prisoners by getting modern education. His daughter Kiran has made an appeal under Sindh Prisons and Corrections Services Act, 2019, to reduce his sentences.

Narrating details to MM News, daughter Kiran said that the case under which his father was sentenced to 25 years of life imprisonment was C-69, out of which he has completed 10 years.

Kiran further said that while being in jail, her father completed his intermediate education, after which he obtained BA degree, that too in first division. She said daughters are generally attached closer to their fathers, and therefore “we two sisters were very close to our father, the moment our father was given jail terms, it was a source of great grief for us, thinking as to how could we recover ourselves from this trauma.”

She said “my father’s age is around 53 years and he has completed his education in such (hard) circumstances, not only has he completed his BA but has also studied Islamic Education.” She said her father learnt Holy Quran with translation, not only that he learnt Quran, but became such a medium to extend benefits to other prisoners from his education.

Kiran said that his father also completed many courses in the jail, including Sindhi literature and Urdu literature courses. She said “the education system in Jail is so good due to efforts by our Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah Sahib who is doing such a great job, because of which the IG and the Jail Superintendent are extending help to provide education to the inmates living there.”

“My father completed his education while being in jail so that he could come out and present himself in a better shape for the society,” she said, adding that education is something through which a person transform himself into a good citizen.

Kiran appealed to Sindh government that as per Sindh Prisons and Corrections Services Act, 2019 and taking into account the education completed by her father in first division, special remission be awarded in the his sentences, and the remaining sentences, if any, be pardoned.

“All our family members direly wish that father should come back home as soon as possible, everyone is pinning hopes (in his return), his case must be reviewed so that our dad can come home and fulfill his responsibilities,” she said.
