EU President pledges more aid in coming weeks for flood-hit Pakistan

NEWYORK: EU Commission President Ursala von der Leyen has pledged more humanitarian aid for Pakistan in the coming week after she met with Prime Minister Shehbaz on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United National General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

She also expressed grief over the loss of lives in ravaging floods in the country.

During the meeting, the premier highlighted the damage wrought by floods, causing widespread damage.

The floods brought on by climate change have killed 1,576 people, uprooted 33 million people, destroyed 30 billion dollars’ worth of property, and destroyed homes, crops, bridges, roads, and cattle since mid-June.

Earlier, Pakistan and the United Nations together made a flash appeal for $160 million to assist the country in coping with the devastating floods.

“Personal condolences for the victims of the terrible floods”. President of EU said in tweeted after the meeting with PM Shehbaz.

“We will come forward with new humanitarian aid in the coming weeks, to support the people of Pakistan,” she added.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden was hailed by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz for “bringing attention to the plight of the flood victims in Pakistan and calling for an expedient response.”

PM Shehbaz thanked US President Joe Biden “for highlighting the plight of the flood victims in Pakistan and urging the world for an immediate response”.

Moreover, the prime minister had also met various world leaders on Wednesday and highlighted the need for collective action to deal with climate change.

He recently met US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who expressed sympathy for the flood victims and assured the PM of US commitment to stand with Pakistan at this difficult time, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The premier and his team also met UNGA chief Csaba Kőrösi on the sidelines of the UNGA session.
