Senior journalist Muhammad Ziauddin passes away

ISLAMABAD: Veteran journalist Muhammad Ziauddin has passed away on Monday after a prolonged illness in Islamabad at the age of 83.

State-owned media confirmed the news paying homage to the deceased for his illustrious career spanning 60 years. His funeral prayers will be offered today after Asar prayers in Islamabad’s Media Town.

Born in the Madras (present-day India) in 1938, Ziauddin’s family arrived in Pakistan in 1952, five years after partition. He moved to Pakistan eight years later in 1960.

Muhammad Ziauddin was known for his reporting and columns for six decades and remained associated with English daily Dawn as its editor for 20 years. In July 2014, Ziauddin resigned as the executive editor of the English daily and worked as a freelance journalist.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain expressed deep and sorrow over his demise. “Ziauddin was one of most capable, fiercely independent journalist he came across, has left for his final abode. Ziauddin was no commoner, a wise man – integrity and boldness added to his personality,” said the minister.

“You will be missed Zia sb,” he tweeted, adding that the services of the journalist would be remembered forever. He prayed Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Farrukh Habib said he is in shock after hearing the news of Muhamamd Ziauddin’s death he was one of the most fiercely independent journalists. He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani also expressed deep sorrow and grief over the passing of Ziauddin. In a condolence message, the chairman prayed to Allah Almighty to show His countless bounties on the departed soul in eternal peace.

He paid rich tribute to the late Ziauddin for his services in the field of journalism. The services of deceased journalists for the journalism will always be remembered, he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman Senate Mirza Muhammad Afridi, leader of the House in Senate Dr. Waseem Shahzad, and leader of the opposition Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani also offered condolences on the demise of Ziauddin.
