A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey early on Tuesday morning, the National Centre of Meteorology said. The tremor was recorded at a depth of 75.1km in the south-west of Turkey at 03.17 am UAE time, according to the NCM’s National Seismic Network.
According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake was at a depth of 68 km.
Turkey’s disaster management agency said. At least seven people were injured while trying to escape their homes in panic.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said the earthquake was centered in the Mediterranean Sea and struck at 02:17 a.m. It was felt in neighboring regions, including in the Greek island of Rhodes, waking many from their sleep, Turkey’s NTV television reported.
In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces. Another 6,000 people were killed in the northern parts of neighboring Syria.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 centered in the Pazarcik district jolted Kahramanmaras and hit several provinces, including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Kilis.
