The Pakistan Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed on Thursday that 35 Pakistanis are among the Hajj pilgrims who died due to a heatwave in Makkah during Hajj.
According to a private TV channel, the ministry has yet to announce the identities of the deceased pilgrims. However, it confirmed that 35 Pakistanis succumbed to extreme heat during the Hajj days.
The ministry stated that these pilgrims breathed their last in different places, including Arafat and Mina.
It should be noted that this year, over 900 pilgrims have died during Hajj due to extreme heat in Makkah and surrounding areas, including Mina. Most of the deceased pilgrims are Egyptians.
As per AFP 922 pilgrims have died due to extreme heat during five days of Hajj 2024. Out of these deceased over 600 belong to Egypt.
It said in addition to Egypt, fatalities have also been confirmed by Jordan, Indonesia, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, though in many cases authorities have not specified the cause.
Egypt has not yet shared an official count, but other countries whose citizens flocked to the holy city of Mecca have been reporting tolls: at least 138 from Indonesia, 41 from Jordan, and 35 from Tunisia.
