Lahore authorities have announced strict measures to curb false allegations of sexual assault, saying that individuals filing baseless rape cases will face up to three years of imprisonment under the Anti-Rape Act.
The city’s Investigation Wing is currently developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure effective enforcement of the law.
Police underscored that filing a false rape allegation will be a punishable offense under the act.
Police records reveal that 47% of sexual assault cases reported in Lahore this year were found to be baseless.
Investigations into over 400 cases have exonerated 70 individuals, while 800 cases are still under investigation. Completed investigation reports for the remaining cases have already been submitted to the courts.
Officials said that the plaintiff in cases against those making false allegations will either be the investigating officer or the wrongly accused individual, with a formal decision on this process expected soon.
