19-year-old teenager becomes youngest Pakistani to finish Ironman triathlon

KARACHI: A 19-year-old Pakistani triathlete has become the youngest from the country to complete a full Ironman triathlon, marking a milestone for endurance sport in Pakistan.

The athlete Rayan Habib finished the gruelling race that comprises a 3.8-kilometre swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km marathon run, all completed consecutively within the 17-hour cutoff time. The event is widely regarded as one of the toughest one-day sporting challenges in the world.

While Pakistan has seen several athletes complete the Ironman 70.3 — a half-distance format — in recent years, the full Ironman remains rare. Triathletes Sana Arif and Shahrez Khan have previously represented Pakistan in Ironman 70.3 events across Turkey, Bahrain and the Philippines, with Shahrez becoming the second Pakistani to qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship after a 7th-place age-group finish in Puerto Princesa.

Completing the full Ironman at 19 requires exceptional discipline, coaches say. Training typically demands two sessions a day, balancing swimming, cycling and running while managing recovery, nutrition and academics. “Triathlon training is very time consuming as you have to train in four disciplines. You need to be mentally strong and focused,” triathlete Sana Arif has previously said of the sport’s demands.

The Pakistan Triathlon Federation has yet to issue an official statement, but athletes in the community hailed the achievement on social media, calling it “a breakthrough moment for youth in endurance sport.”

The Ironman brand does not host full-distance races in Pakistan, so athletes usually travel abroad to compete. Most Pakistanis have raced in Turkey, the UAE, Oman and Southeast Asia due to proximity and access to certified courses.

If verified, the 19-year-old’s finish would make them the youngest Pakistani to complete the full 140.6-mile distance, lowering the unofficial national benchmark and potentially inspiring more junior athletes to take up multisport.
