WASHINGTON: New cases of the novel coronavirus that first appeared in China last year are being reported daily around the world.
The worldwide tally of novel coronavirus infections rose past 3,917,999. At least 270,000 people have died from COVID-19, while more than 1.2 million people have recovered to date.
In the United States, another 2,448 people lost their lives to COVID-19, taking American fatalities past 79,000. In Spain, the total number of cases was at 256,000 while the death toll ascended past 26,000.
Italy, which will function gradually over the week, also noted another rise in infections as the total number of cases rose to 215,000, however, the number of deaths was significantly lower with 275 added to the total.
The United Kingdom witnessed 539 deaths from COVID-19, taking the extraordinary death toll in the country past 30,000.
Turkey also had a high fatality day on earlier as the death toll rose by 57 to reach 3,641. In Belgium, 8,415 people succumbed to the disease while Brazil reported 9,190 deaths due to the coronavirus.
Over 165,929 people have infected while 1,625 people died of the virus in Russia. Israel has reported 103,135 coronavirus cases while 6,486 deaths.
Moreover, Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a briefing from Geneva, listed a series of steps needed before countries lift measures designed to control the spread of the COVID-19 respiratory disease, such as surveillance controls and health systems preparedness.
