Indian Olympic wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have made a significant shift into politics by joining the opposition Congress party.
This decision follows a tumultuous year for the athletes, especially Phogat, who emotionally returned from the Paris Olympics after failing to make weight for her event, leading to her retirement from wrestling.
Both wrestlers had been prominent figures in protests against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), accused of sexual harassment.
Their protest was part of a broader movement for justice, and their entry into politics comes just before the provincial elections in their home state of Haryana, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seeking re-election.
Vinesh Phogat expressed her pride in joining a party that supports women and opposes injustice, while Bajrang Punia reaffirmed their commitment to continue working hard for the betterment of the country.
