“Kalki 2898 AD,” directed by Nag Ashwin, features an impressive cast from Bollywood and the South Indian film industry, including Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan. The film is set to hit theaters on Thursday, June 27. A million tickets were pre-purchased for this science fiction epic, indicating that film would have the third-largest opening day ever at the Indian box office, among the excitement surrounding it.
Plot
Nag Ashwin’s “Kalki 2898 AD” is a dystopian film that blends science fiction and mythology, often described as India’s ‘Avengers moment,’ as per Rana Daggubati. The film stars Prabhas as Bhairava, a modern, fun-loving savior, and Deepika Padukone as Sumati, a mother once again after her roles in Ayan Mukerji’s “Brahmastra” two years ago and Atlee’s “Jawan” last year. This time, she portrays the mother of an unborn child, destined to be Kalki, the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, whom the evil forces seek to destroy.
The unborn child is protected by Ashwatthama, played by Amitabh Bachchan, inspired by the immortal character from the Mahabharata, who has survived through the ages thanks to a gemstone on his forehead. The trailer also features a younger, de-aged version of Amitabh in flashbacks and showcases him performing high-octane action sequences.
Kamal Haasan takes on the role of Yaskin, presumably the main antagonist, who aims to kill Sumati’s unborn child to maintain the Kalyug he has created. Disha Patani appears as Roxie, a bounty hunter, and Keerthy Suresh lends her voice to Buji, a futuristic car and Bhairava’s sidekick.
Cast
The ensemble cast includes Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani, Rajendra Prasad, Shobhana, Saswata Chatterjee, Brahmanandam, Pasupathy, Anna Ben, Malvika Nair, and Kavya Ramachandran.
OTT Release
Kalki 2898 AD will be available on Netflix, its exclusive streaming partner, approximately two to three months after its theatrical release. Expect the film to be out on Netflix by late August to early September.
