ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially set March 9 as the date for the presidential election, as revealed in a notice and schedule issued on Friday.
The announcement, by the Constitutional provisions, outlines the detailed process leading up to the election. Candidates vying for the esteemed position of the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan are required to submit their nomination papers by March 2, before noon, at designated locations in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta.
The scrutiny of these nomination papers by the returning officers is scheduled for March 4, with the provision for the withdrawal of candidature the following day. Subsequently, the ECP will release the list of validly nominated candidates on the same day, March 4, while March 6 has been designated as the deadline for retirement.
The crucial polling day, where the next President of Pakistan will be determined, is set for March 9. The voting process will take place at the National Assembly and all provincial assemblies, commencing at 10:00 am and concluding at 4:00 pm.
As the nation anticipates this significant event, political observers are keenly watching the developments leading up to the election, marking a crucial moment in Pakistan’s democratic process.
Notably, President Arif Alvi’s constitutionally mandated 5-year term concluded in August of the previous year. However, owing to the absence of Assemblies, he continues to serve in the post.
It’s pertinent to highlight that the coalition parties, PML-N and PPP, have put forth Asif Ali Zardari as their nominee for the presidential post. If elected, this would mark his second tenure as president.
