Hollywood has a habit of resurrecting long-dormant films with belated sequels, and it’s no surprise that after 36 years, “Beetlejuice” is back in action with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
The spooky sequel, directed by Tim Burton, is raking in millions, grossing $51.6 million in its second weekend and reaching $188 million in North America, with a global total of $264 million.
With a production budget of $100 million, Michael Keaton reprises his role as the mischievous Beetlejuice, joined by Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder, who return as Delia and Lydia Deetz, respectively. Jenna Ortega plays Astrid, Lydia’s daughter, while Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux complete the star-studded cast.
Plot
The film revisits Burton’s quirky Afterlife, centering on Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), her stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara), and Lydia’s teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega). The Deetz family returns to the infamous “ghost house” following the death of Lydia’s father, sparking Beetlejuice’s renewed attempts to convince Lydia to marry him.
This time, Astrid finds herself trapped in the Afterlife, courtesy of a one-way ride on the Soul Train. Lydia must choose between her sleazy TV producer boyfriend and Beetlejuice to save her daughter. In classic Beetlejuice style, chaos ensues, especially with the return of his vengeful, soul-sucking ex-wife Delores, who literally stitches herself back together to seek revenge.
When Will the Movie Be on Netflix?
Netflix has reportedly been collaborating with Warner Bros. Pictures for secondary streaming rights. For example, “Evil Dead Rise” hit Netflix on September 23, 2024, after a theatrical release in April 2023, followed by an exclusive run on Max from June 2023. Based on this pattern, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” may arrive on Max around December 2024, staying there for roughly 15 months before landing on Netflix US in early 2026.
So if the past is anything to go by, most regions of the world would have to wait for at least two years to watch the movie on Netflix.
