Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar stated that the Constitution permits the appointment of ad hoc judges, and he supports their appointment. He also clarified that recent reports about extending the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa are false.
In an interview with a private television channel, Law Minister Tarar emphasized that ad hoc judges would be appointed by the Judicial Commission, not solely by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP). He expressed his support for a constitutional amendment to reform the judicial system.
Tarar revealed that during a meeting with the CJP in late April or early May, the issue of tenure extension was discussed. However, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa expressed disinterest in extending his tenure. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah supported the proposal to extend the CJP’s tenure, stating that Parliament has the authority to make such amendments.
The law minister noted that the high pension bill has fueled discussions on extending the tenure of government employees. He pointed out that globally, the retirement age of government employees has been increasing to manage pension expenses better. The proposal to extend the tenure of all government employees, including the judiciary, is under consideration, and Parliament holds the power to amend the Constitution.
Azam Nazir Tarar also mentioned that the Supreme Court’s recent decision has provided an opportunity for party strengthening, as eight judges effectively rewrote the Constitution in the case concerning reserved seats.
