Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat has expressed concern over the involvement of retired General Faiz Hameed in politics, stating that his support has caused significant problems for PTI, with no tangible benefits.
Marwat commented on the recent press release by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), which made it clear that PTI’s connection with Faiz Hameed’s affairs is unlikely to end anytime soon. He added that efforts are being made to create new and serious issues for PTI founder Imran Khan, particularly in relation to Hameed’s ongoing legal troubles.
Marwat emphasized that support for a retired military officer like Faiz Hameed should be based on more solid evidence rather than mere sympathy, which, according to him, has been lacking. He further stated that had there been any substantial evidence of wrongdoing, it should have been presented immediately following the events of May 9.
In his remarks, Marwat drew a parallel between Faiz Hameed and General Bajwa, noting that both have caused significant harm to PTI. He suggested that PTI has had to bear the consequences of the so-called “regime change operation” due to Hameed’s closeness to the party. “We are stuck because of Faiz Hameed, and we haven’t gained anything from his support,” Marwat concluded.
It is important to note that Faiz Hameed, the former head of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has officially been charged. According to the Pakistan Army’s media wing, ISPR, the process for a Field General Court Martial (FGCM) against Faiz Hameed has begun, with him being formally charged in the next phase. The charges include involvement in political activities, violations of the Official Secrets Act, misuse of authority and state resources, and causing harm to national security and interests.
Additionally, ISPR confirmed that an investigation is underway to probe Hameed’s alleged involvement in violent incidents and unrest in the country during the ongoing court-martial proceedings.
