The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory, forecasting cold and dry conditions across most parts of the country, with temperatures in Karachi expected to dip into the single digits within the next 24 hours.
In a statement, the department highlighted that chilly, dry weather would persist in many regions, with moderate to heavy fog predicted in the plains of Punjab, upper Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The fog is also expected to affect parts of the Potohar region, Kashmir, and some areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, making travel difficult during the early morning and evening hours.
Karachi’s Cold Snap
The coastal city of Karachi is bracing for a significant temperature drop, with the mercury likely to fall to between 9°C and 11°C over the next day. The cold weather is expected to continue through the night, with dry conditions forecasted for the coming 24 hours. The city may also experience intermittent strong winds, further intensifying the chill.
In the past 24 hours, Karachi recorded a minimum temperature of 12°C, with humidity levels at 44% and northeast winds blowing at a speed of 8 km/h. Residents are urged to take precautions against the cold weather.
Cold and Snow in Northern Areas
Across northern regions, the cold weather continues to intensify, exacerbated by snowfall in various areas. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the weather is expected to remain dry and cold, with extremely cold conditions in the upper districts. Cities such as Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan, Charsadda, Swabi, and DI Khan are likely to experience severe fog, particularly in the morning and evening.
In Swat and Dir, temperatures have already plunged below freezing, with Kalam and Dir recording -4°C, while Chitral, Malam Jabba, and Parachinar have seen temperatures as low as -2°C.
Nationwide Cold Weather
As snow continues to blanket parts of the country, the drop in temperature has been most notable in the northern regions, with Peshawar recording a minimum temperature of 0°C and a forecasted high of 19°C. However, the cold is expected to persist across much of the country, including Karachi, where the temperature has already reached 10°C.
The Meteorological Department advises the public to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions against the ongoing cold wave.
