RAWALPINDI: Several inmates including two condemned prisoners were injured in a clash at Adiala Central Jail in Rawalpindi.
According to sources, the prisoners were present in their barracks when a quarrel broke out between convicts Sabahat, Hebatullah and Amir Zaman for making noise.
During the altercation, Sabahat and several other inmates joined hands and started attacking Hebatullah, a prisoner convicted in a murder case, and Amir Zaman. Both were severely injured in the attack with shaving blades and self-made cutters made from spoons.
Hebatullah is a convict in a murder case registered by the Karachi Company police station and Amir Zaman is convicted in a murder case in Wah Saddar police station.
As soon as the clash was reported, security personnel including Jail Superintendent Chaudhry Ijaz Asghar rushed to the spot and took the prisoners involved in the clash into custody.
Jail superintendent Chaudhry Ijaz Asghar along with the security staff reached the scene and controlled the situation.The prisoners were shifted to separate barracks while the injured were taken to the DHQ hospital.
According to the hospital officials, Hebatullah has suffered wounds on his face and waist while Amir Zaman sustained wounds on his neck caused by a sharp-edged weapon.
Inspector General of Prisons Shahid Saleem Baig ordered DIG Rawalpindi Malik Shaukat Ferooz to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. Jail authorities said the injured were out of danger but an FIR will be registered against the accused prisoners.
Punjab minister for prisons Fayyazul Hassan Chauhan took notice of the incident and sought a preliminary investigation report from the IG prisons. He also recommended the suspension of the deputy superintendent jail Mazhar Panjutha for negligence.
